Just make sure you take pictures of everything he is asking $$ for. Bring papers showing the cost of these items from the hardware store. The more prepared you are the more he will look like a [censored] and the less you will have to pay him.
I totally pwned my landlord in court.

The installation fee alone is an out rage. People go to college and dont make that hourly rate. Plus it is not too terribly ard to screw a door to a latch. Especially if you have someone holding the door steady for you. 8 hours is a full day of work. If that is all the work a real repair man could do in a day he wouldnt be able to afford to live.

Guys, do you know if I am responsible to pay for the carpet even though there's a very strong case that they were ripping it out and replacing it anyway? Or is this to be decided by a judge in court?

At one of my friends places they charge $100 per square foot of carpet that they feel needs to be replaced. I have a feeling many time they claim they had to replace it when in fact they just cleaned it. My parents also got really screwed over because of their carpet when they had an apartment. They had spilled something on their carpet and it had stained, but the apartment complex was replacing all the carpets anyways. At the end of their lease they get a bill for the carpet. My parents refused to pay it because they were replacing the carpet anyways. The apartment actually sent a collection agency after them and everntually my parents had to pay. You're probably pretty screwed with the carpet too. I personally wouldn't pay anything until they force you to. I would also bring up the fact that you are willing to take them to court. They may drop or at least lower the charges. This worked for us, although the place we were at also did some other really shady/illegal things that we were able to use to threaten them with.

I actually brought in witnesses (not my pot dealer or loser buddies) but my grandmother, girlfriend, etc. come in and tell the judge that the carpet was in need of replacement when I moved in. I payed nothing for it.

you shouldn't have to pay a dime for the carpet. As for the other damages, do the repairs yourself.

CSC, should I not have to pay for the carpet because it's apparant they were going to replace it anyway or because it's normal wear and tear the landlord should cover as apples has stated.
