don't worry about sound quality....you'll be butchering most songs anyway as you're just learning. And you probably won't even be able to hear the difference in nicer guitars.

Just worry about finding a guitar that is easy for you to play. Find one with really good action. For many people, an eletric is much easier to start out on.

Don't buy online...you need to go play it yourself and find you that you like.

After you've played a few years and want a better guitar, then we'll worry more about the overall quality of the instrument.

If you live In Canada, I strongly recommend buying a seagull. They are very cheap, high quality acoustic guitars.
The reason for the low price is that they are made in Canada from Canadian wood and so you dont have any importing fees and such. It's lasted me like six years and still sounds great.

Brother,

I find people here in your situation time after time after time. And, I tell you, it really warms my heart to be able to offer you my line of great guitars and instructional videos. For just a couple hundred dollars you can get all of the performance and luxury found in guitars worth thousands of dollars. Plus, you can recieve a VHS or DVD with my personal instruction. I've been playing and teaching guitar for many years, and it really is my joy, my passion, my reason for existence to pass on the gift of music to younger generations, for the glory of all.

God Bless,

Esteban

from guitarcenter. I had them pricematch the online price from musician's friend, so it ended up being around $300.

Just for future reference, Musician's Friend owns Guitar Center, so their prices are almost always the same. Just clarifying that for people who hate Guitar Center and buy from Musician's Friend thinking they're taking business away from Guitar Center.
