[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Blair is a big reason that the US went through the whole UN process leading up to the Iraq war [/ QUOTE ] So what? It didn't work, yet both of them went ahead with the war anyway. [/ QUOTE ] It's commonly thought that Blair went ahead with Iraq thinking that the UN and multilateral initiatives would play a larger role in the war than they ended up taking. [/ QUOTE ] Huh? After his attempt to get a resolution authorising the war failed, it was clear the UN and multilateral initiatives would play no role in the war. [/ QUOTE ] How was that at all clear? [/ QUOTE ] Because the UN is not going to get involved in something it has just declined to endorse and is by its rules illegal. Without UN endorsement, it is pretty unlikely although far from impossible that most other countries are going to get involved. |

That's actually a pretty big assumption (and there are multilateral possibilities other than the UN). Even if it were true, Blair would be seen as weak if he backed down from his stance on supporting the war based on something that is almost a technicality.
