Re: Woud you recommend people take up poker?
Oh, so its OK for you to play, but you are going to make a judgement about other people's ability to handle poker. Thanks for protecting us from ourselves.

Re: Woud you recommend people take up poker?
doesn't look like too many folks here wanted to give you a serious answer.
if you have a friend who has this addictive/compulsive personality - then I'd say keep them away. Poker is addicting - the more you play, the more you want to play (especially at the beginning) - the more you learn, the more you want to learn. When you're not playing, you're reading. When you're not reading, you're watching videos. When you're not watching videos, you're listening to poker podcasts. If you have a friend who can't handle money, has that addictive personality - do him/her a favor - and maybe keep them away from the game. However - if you have a friend who CAN handle it....then I'd say yes - definitely. Poker is a GREAT game - that won't ever get boring (unless you play for hours & hours & hours every day of your life)...there will always be more to learn, more to analyze, more to experience. Additionally, I've found that skills acquired at playing poker can actually be beneficial to "real life". I've found that I've gained assertiveness, gotten bolder with taking (calculated) risks...ability to observe other people, etc.....it's actually an excellent game to teach someone with a passive personality...in order to succeed at the game, that person will have to display a more aggressive personality at the table....and he/she may carry that over to real life - and be the better for it. |

But IMHO there is a reason that only 5% of people are long term winners- and it's not because they are not clever enough to learn the concepts- it's because human traits (some of which are counter-productive to wining) dictate their decisions. Thanks again for your take on this. Ian |

[/ QUOTE ] Poker, We are all responsible for our own actions. A gambling addict is going to find a way to get his fix, with or without your help. All you can do is educate the person about the good and bad aspects of poker, the rest is up to him. The reason most people are losing players isn't because they are addicts, its because they lack the patience, discipline, knowledge, etc.. to become good players. |

Re: Woud you recommend people take up poker?
Not for a living. Though I see alot of guys trying it and they really aren't that good.
I'd recommend someone give it a go casually. The only time I'd have a reservation on that is if the person in question is known to have a gambling problem. If not, go for it. b |

Re: Woud you recommend people take up poker?
Yes. I still consider poker to be the opposite of gambling, because you can choose to put your money on the line only when you have the best of it. If someone is a pit player, especially, I strongly recommend that they take up poker. Worst case, they lose the same money they were going to lose in the pits anyway. Best case, they become a winning player. So either they're no worse off or they're substantially better off. It's pretty much a no-brainer. q/q |

Re: Woud you recommend people take up poker?
It depends on what you mean by "people." Most of the time there is little or no harm in talking about the game. At work it could hurt your career, among certain family members it could hurt your reputation and with some friends, you could be endorsing something that they cannot handle. So treat your love of the game like the actual game and think about things before speaking. If you do run into a room full of uneducated, dim witted, math morons it wont do much good telling them to play poker because they'll get lost trying to find the casino, they wont be able to use the ATM and they'll hold up the game when they try to eat the checks.
