If he is the one that I'm thinking of he often plays for a half hour or an hour before he goes home if there is an open seat and no board for the table. He will also play extended sessions on his off days on occasion. He's an excellent stud player. Not just good.

More often I've seen him on the 40/80 mixed and stud 8 games. I once played him three handed at 40/80 stud 8. This was even though I knew how good he is. I took the attitude that if I lost money I was getting good lessons by seeing how he played. I learned what I wanted to know without losing too much. I also learned that playing split pot games short handed can be mind numbing too.

Most emplyees at the card rooms will play lower limit games when they are off. That may be why you don't notice them that much. He is one of the very few that play in the top section when they are off.

I agree with you and I think there's a pretty good case for not letting employees play in the game. That being said, it should only be the fish and not serious players who get upset after being hit & run, whether by the floorman or some random bum off the street.

This is pretty standard for HP. But at the limits I play at, the employees that sit in usually arent very good, so its a non-issue for me. However, I could see how the dealer/floorman's action could piss off regulars and make them not come back.

Basically, it wouldn't be an issue if your friend hadn't lost. Like everyone has said casino employees often play in the games. The floor even told your friend that he was just on a break, so it's not like he sat down won a big pot and then ran because he won.

"OK, since you work here, we're going to tell you how much you can win, and how long you have to sit there. You can't check-raise us. You can't leave if you get ahead. You can't try to win against us...."

(Cardroom employee says, "Screw this," and leaves.)

"Hey, this seat's been open for a while! Get us a player!"

But I agree its bad form for the guy to do a hit & run.

One last note about this particular floor manager. I had a chat with him the other day. It turns out the if the game isn't going, he starts it. If it looks like it is going short, he sits in to keep it going. In essence, he's actually responsible for a juicy 25-50 stud game spread on a regular basis at Hollywood park. He'll do the same for the 20-40 stud8 and the 40-80 mixed stud8/Omaha8.

This must be a West Coast thing, or at least a non-East Coast thing. I know for a fact that Foxwoods employees can't play there (hence they have to go to AC to play poker). I'm not certain about AC rooms, but it's not uncommon to see a semi-uniformed dealer from the Borgata show up in a game at the Trop. I gather they can't play in their own room, but I'm not certain.

Foxwoods dealers can't play at Foxwoods - in AC, dealers can't play at their own casino but can at others. In other locales, dealers playing where they work is often common.

Basic rule of life:

Don't sh!t where you eat.

Off duty dealers in the games....maybe
Off duty floor in the games.....under no circumstances.
Poker Room manager to blame.
