That's a good question. There is a lot more cash on the Asian side, at least at Commerce, and a lot more commotion, easier for somebody to scout out and follow a victim out the door without being noticed.

Wouldn't the L.A. Times know the difference between discrete and discreet?

You're really quite paranoid aren't you?

Not at all. Its really kinda necessary in Los Angeles. Since you are in UK and might be unfamiliar I will explain to you that when people refer to Los Angeles, it means a huge area comprising multiple counties and is more than 100 miles wide by 100 miles long.

Anyway, in the past few years:

- a woman was followed out of Hollywood Park and robbed and stuffed in her trunk.

- a man was followed from HP all the way to Santa Clarita(30+ miles?) and robbed at gunpoint.

- I played at a $6-12 game where a very drunk Australian guy was ahead over $1200 and buying the entire table doubles. A guy that obviously did not know him kept coming by the table and offering the Australian a ride. My friend and I informed security and they removed the guy offering the ride.

-a very well know local sometimes hostess was very drunk at Commerce bar...the one that used to be by the buffet. I saw her being helped over the Terrace and towards the exit by two guys I knew she did not know. She kept drunkedly protesting, but not physically offering resistance. I informed security. The two men were escorted into the security office.

-Doyle Brunson was followed home in Las Vegas and rolled in front of his house.

-A very well known and successful low roller tournament player in So cal has been the victim of attempted roberies multiple times. I say attempted because usually the attackers left in worse shape than the victim.

I have not even touched the tip of the iceberg. In the past five years, I have seen in person gang attacks, so many drug deals I cannot count, a girl get run over by a car(and no one offer assistance) a shooting, and several serious traffice accidents.

It must be blissful to live in that naive liberal world where one does not have to constantly be aware of ones surroundings.

Not as strange as it may seem. Friend of mine found himself being followed as he left a rural public park. This was before the common existence of cell phones, but after he was SURE he was being followed, he used his 2m amateur radio gear to call the local cop shop. He told them he was being followed, and he was going to be arriving out front of the cop shop in about 5 minutes and asked that they have someone there to meet him. They did.

Turns out he was being followed by two off-duty police reservists playing undercover hero. They thought him being in a rural park just before closing was suspicious, so they took it upon themselves to follow him. Steve claimed there was a lot of yelling coming from the police Lt or Capt or whomever it was that was there at the time, explaining to these reservists the right and wrong way to do things.

Truth is as strange as fiction.

Fact is stranger than fiction, as fiction has to make sense.

(sorry do not know who to attribute that quote to, but I like it)

Call me paranoid, but I am always on the lookout for people following me while I drive. If a car follows me for 2 or more turns, I will routinely alter my route and not go directly home. Usually, I do a series of 3-4 turns so I go in a circle. If the car is still following me, then I will head straight to the nearest police station. I also alter my routes to/from work at random (I have approx 6 distinct routes that are roughly the same distance). You never know when you may inadvertently offend someone who is prone to road rage, or be mistaken for some guy who slept with a psycho's wife, or whatever.

I have only headed to the police station twice. The first time it was a random car that was apparently lost and turned off shortly after my 4 turn manouver. The second time, the car followed me right into the police parking lot. As I was moving quickly to the station front door, my wife yelled out from the passenger seat. She was in her Mom's (new) car and saw me driving home from work so thought it would be a good idea to flag me down and say hello. Needless to say, I had a discussion with her about not doing this in the future unless there was an emergency of some type.

The above is SOP at all times for me. In cases where I am leaving a casino and have cashed out any significant amount of money, I am extra vigilant to watch all cars behind me and verify that no one is following me. I think it is completely irresponsible to risk your family's life by allowing someone to follow you home.

If he had hung a "do not disturb" sign on his house before he left, this would have never had happened.
