Re: Harry Eng Bottles
I just found a bottle and a lightbulb that just barely fails to fit. I have some ideas on how to get it in there, and I may try it.
Now where did I leave that hammer... |

Dammit. I was really close. The bulb survived but now I don't have any more bottles. |

And how about the baseballs too. [/ QUOTE ] I think he took the cover off the balls and restitched them inside the bottles. |

Re: Harry Eng Bottles
Wow! I would have put good money on the bulb breaking.
Try wrapping the bottle with damp raffia. The old trick of sucking an egg into a bottle using a match seems kind of appropriate. |

Wow! I would have put good money on the bulb breaking. [/ QUOTE ] No way. Glass breaks easily when you put pressure on it from the inside of the bottle. The reason glass bottles are strong on the outside is because of the pricniple of the arch. Basically, a glass cylinder is like an infinite number of arches, and putting pressure on the outside will compress the glass. Putting pressure on the inside will expand the glass, breaking it. |

And as I stood there, mouth open, he told me. I had to admit, the solution was indeed simple. And ingenious. [/ QUOTE ] You know, i think i understand that answer to that one. He put a light bulb into a bottle by smashing it. He didn't say he put an unbroken lightbulb in! Or maybe he put in a tiny bulb, just to say he put it in? Also, glass has refractive properties that make it look like the volume inside is larger than it really is. Next time you drink a beer, look at the sides of the glass. Do you see glass or beer? You see beer! You only see the thickness of a glass bottle if you break it. But that still doesn't explain the lightbulb through the mouth... |

Maybe something with temperature - getting the bulb really cold?
