there might be this year with the AL central and AL East both having multiple worthy teams...someone is going to be left out

great division race, not pennant I guess

Either the Tigers totally collapse and an AL East team limps into the WC or we only get one AL east team this year, methinks. My guess: Yankees miss the playoffs this year. (STFU HOMER!)

I don't know the odds but if I had to guess that the ChiSox would finish with 101 wins and the Tigers would finish with 99.

Is it safe to say that with the wild card, there will never be a great pennent race ever again?

The best you can expect now is 3rd best in one league vs. 4th (which probably means a battle of 90-70 teams).

last year's AL could have provided a great race if not for cleveland totally collapsing. imagine the loser of the sox-yankees series not getting into the playoffs anyway.

That just reminded me that Atlanta used to be in the NL west, WTF was that all about? Sheesh.

yeah, it was pretty dumb, but when the divisions were created, it wasn't really that big a deal geographically. sure, atlanta and cincinnati are farther east than chicago and st louis, but compare this to arizona being in the NFC east while carolina was in the west.

I was very much used to the Cincy NL-West rivalries when I was a kid (especially against LA for much of the 70's and 80's).

But man did we have an awful lot of 10:00 and 10:30pm games on TV.

I very much recall that great NL West race of 93.

When there were only two divisions and not that many west coast teams, they had to put a couple of midwestern teams into the west. Cincinnati and Milwaukee seemed like decent enough choices, and when the Braves moved to Atlanta they just stayed in the same division.

The fact that the second place team will be a lock for the WC (assuming they keep their win rates up) will make this considerably less interesting.
