Impossible to name the best. There were a handful of equally incredible songs, and a bucketload of crap too. Very little in the middle, but what was there usually was cross over jazz/funk but I have always been hesitant to call it disco.
And there there is KISS. What should be discussed is the death of disco. Its commonly believed to be the backlash against homosexuals, the birth of punk/new wave and the "death to disco" movement. In reality I think it was something very different - recording budgets. Disco records used full orchestras, this is something that literally cannot be done today unless the record is a guaranteed hit. You have to pay each musician double union rate on average, and the recordings take forever because the talent just doesn't exist anymore. Its a dead art form unfortunately, now a days most scoring work is done on a keyboard using Protools or something similar. I have had a theory for the past 15 years that the first record label to sign a disco-funk / hip hop crossover artist using live musicians will have a successful formula. Imagine the song "Hey Mr DJ" from 10 years ago if it was produced in 1977... it would have been 10x better. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |
