Re: what games give the skilled player the greatest edge?
[ QUOTE ]
all of those concepts are used in LO8, espeically at the higher levels. [/ QUOTE ] But we aren't talking about higher levels. The thread is about loose passive games. I don't think that expert skills are as important in low limit O/8 as in other games. This is based on my own experience and on the opinions of a number of people I respect. In Poker Essays II, Mason Malmuth discusses 12 basic poker skills (game selection, raising, check-raising, semi-bluffing, bluffing, etc.) and their importance in different games. Regarding low limit O/8, he lists hand selection as most important, followed by reading hands and tells. He then says: [ QUOTE ] The rest of the skills listed are in reality not very important. [/ QUOTE ] Regarding poker skills in O/8, Ray Zee says: [ QUOTE ] At the lower limits, where many people play poorly and some of the games are extremely loose, just playing tight will make money. However...at the higher limits... numerous poker skills are required to be a consistent winner. [/ QUOTE ] And: [ QUOTE ] You will need many more poker skills to win at the higher limits, and some of the ideas that apply to these games are irrelevant at the lower limits. [/ QUOTE ] Loose passive games are all about hand selection. You make your decision preflop, and if you don't have the nuts or a draw to the nuts after the flop, you better seriously consider folding. Trying to get fancy will kill you in this game faster than in any other. |

No Limit Hold 'Em.
Duh. But remember, long term, not short term. |

Razz - An unskilled LAP wouldn't watch other people's upcards. From there on it's almost totally mathmatical (throw in a read here and there), thus giving the skilled player the supreme edge.

No Limit Hold 'Em. Duh. But remember, long term, not short term. [/ QUOTE ] The OP specified limit games with community cards (why, I don't know). That leaves out what most would probably consider the most skilled games: 7 Stud high, NLHE, Razz (also the most boring), PLO Omaha high, etc. I think that Pineapple, Crazy Pineapple, etc., are too unusual for most people to comment on. That doesn't leave much. Limit Omaha high is rarely played, especially at lower levels. About all that leaves among regularly played games is limit HE and O/8. I think that a skilled limit HE player has a bigger edge over his competition than a skilled O/8 player at loose passive games. but a skilled poker player should be able to beat either game. |

Re: what games give the skilled player the greatest edge?
I think Omaha High, not Omaha/8 like most have said, mainly because you don't have to chop the pot. The four card structure allows skilled players to have multiple draws for which you will always have pot odds in fixed limit. Most lower skilled players equate omaha to hold 'em and will pay you off with things like high pocket pairs. They also aren't skilled enough at counting "kill cards" (AKA effective outs), so they will often draw ignoring that some of their outs are no good because they improve an opponents hand.
