very cool...as I am not usually a huge fan of this type of music I know I'm missing out on some stellar music that I would like...but this makes it easy for me to take a listen...

Also, I do think I like hip-hop a lot more than rap...but I'm not quite sure of the difference! help me out:

50 Cent - rap (don't like)
Kayne West hip hop (like)
Missy Elliot - hip hop (like)

so how is hip hop different from rap and other sub genres?

Hip-hop is a genre of music. Rap is a vocal style.

Dom,

Please read the linked thread.

Short answer: they are all both rap and hip-hop, and if you wantto sub genere them they're all sub genres of rap/hip-hop.

Beasties = kinda exist in their own gengre
PE = political hip-hop I guess, again, kinda defy gengre
Ja Rule = [censored] [censored] horrible bad club pop music

I have never heard that Pharcyde song, google says its from a compilation or something, I'll have to check that out. I also would of went with daylight of nightlight, and a diffrent ATCQ song, but I think this is a pretty solid list, and a nice mix of diffrent types of hip-hop.

Oh yeah, needs something from Illmatic.

It's from an album called Red Hot and Blue, AIDS record. It's really good.

I thought about something from Illmatic, but even the people who don't know hip-hop tend to get exposed to that record.

I really like that Tribe song and not a lot of people have heard it. I was trying to mix up some classics, and some b-sides and stuff from known artists that people prolly haven't heard.
