Just sue her for damages and ask the judge to sentence her to be your maid for the next 2 years. Hilarity ensues.

[ QUOTE ] Well, you aren't forced to purchase it if you can demonstrate financial responsibility and can pay for your own fuckups. [/ QUOTE ] Say word son? I knew there had to be a stipulation for this. You are a smart cookie. Explain this to me further someone, or provide me with links. I'll be checking out google in anticipation. blake [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, don't believe that guy. At least in some states, there are no exceptions to the law requiring insurance to drive. |

In Texas, where I live, you have 5 ways to satisfy the requirement.
1) motor vehicle liability insurance 2) surety bond 3) deposit with comptroller 4) deposit with county judge 5) self-insurance (must own more than 25 vehicles) See Texas Transportation Code Sec. 601.051. So that's how you're not forced to buy insurance, at least in Texas. |

[ QUOTE ]
What are the requirements of the Mandatory Auto Insurance Law? Anyone operating a motor vehicle on our state highways must have an insurance liability policy, a certificate of deposit, liability bond to the required limits, or if you have 26 or more vehicles, you may self-insure. [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] What are the requirements if I purchase a bond, Certificate of Deposit, or self-insure? If a bond is purchased it must be in the same amounts as the required insurance. If a certificate of deposit is used, the amount is $60,000 which may be satisfied by cash or securities. A certificate of self-insurance is available pursuant to the financial responsibility law to owners of a fleet of more than 25 vehicles. [/ QUOTE ] Link. Its not the case for all states but he wasn't just pulling [censored] out of his ass. |

Yeah, I live in Texas and saw that it's a $50k depoist with the comptroller. I imagine that the other deposits/bonds are similar. If you've got 50k sitting around though there's a lot better places for it than using it to avoid car insurance.

Do I have to actually give the money to someone or is it good enough that I have the money in mutual funds?

In Texas, you have to give the $55K to either the comptroller or county judge to hang on to. OR, you can file a surety bond, establishing an executable lien on real property. Your state may be different.
Clearly, there has to be some means to keep you from cashing it out after you ram into someone. |
