Re: Chicken pox parties-
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] But a safe and effective chickenpox vaccine is part of the recommended childhood vaccination series. It keeps 85% of vaccinated kids from ever getting the illness, says chickenpox virus expert Anne A. Gershon, MD, director of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at New York's Columbia University. "In a time when we have the chickenpox vaccine available -- one of the safest vaccines we have ever had, and one that works very well -- there is no point in exposing your child to the natural infection," Gershon tells WebMD. [/ QUOTE ] LOL at the "doctor". Having chicken pox as a child is far less dangerous than having it as an adult. That's why I recommend sending your kid to school if he/she has the chicken pox - you're doing the other kids a favor by exposing them at an earlier, and therefore less dangerous, age. [/ QUOTE ] But why would you do that if you could just give them the vaccination? Chickenpox may not be overly dangerous, but if the vaccination is safer, as the article suggests, why not go with that? |

Re: Chicken pox parties-
The vaccination is not 100% but if a kid gets a breakthough infection, its generally milder.
Why risk letting your kids get it, especially a bad case? Those little pox can pop up anywhere, in the mouth and down the throat, the genitals and even the corneas of the eyes. A typical case will last for 5-7 days, which means a miserable child for that period of time. |

Re: Chicken pox parties-
[ QUOTE ]
I've never heard of pox parties, but exposing kids to chicken pox when they were young used to be standard practice. I think the vaccine is fairly new. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah. This thread is news to me. Hey, I actually learned something useful in OOT! |
