The main reason iPod batteries go bad is from overcharging. This causes the battery to pretty much destroy itself and ultimately turning into a piece of lead. So the best way to keep your iPod battery from doing this is not to leave it plugged in all the time. Only charge it until its full and then disconnect it. Also if you wait to charge it until its pretty much empty the battery will last longer as well. Although this doesnt make the battery last for ever, it will last much longer.

When I tried to replace my battery, I broke my ipod. The connection from the headphone jack to the motherboard broke, so all i have is an expensive Data storage device.

I just wanted to say I went with a batteryship kit, did it in like 10 minutes, and as far as I can tell everything is working fine. iTunes recognizes it, it's charging, and the headphone jack is fine. I have a 3rd generation iPod that would play for maybe 2 hours tops on a single charge and it also couldn't have the backlight turn on, because if it did, it would turn off as soon as the backlight went off too. I haven't tried using it straight through to see how long it'll go, but next time I'm on any long trip, I'll be sure to check back in. Pretty excited about possibly getting 8 hours+.
