Victor,

A few months ago, a friend of mine got the gout! Most of us were very surprised and did not think this disease existed in modern times. None of us had any idea what it was except that we thought maybe pirates or medieval knights had it, along with scurvy and rickets and other old-timey diseases.

III. Dialogue Between Franklin and the Gout

Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790)

Midnight, 22 October, 1780.

FRANKLIN. Eh! Oh! eh! What have I done to merit these cruel sufferings? 1
GOUT. Many things; you have ate and drank too freely, and too much indulged those legs of yours in their indolence. 2
FRANKLIN. Who is it that accuses me? 3
GOUT. It is I, even I, the Gout.

The big toe is more often involved than other joints. In an acute gout attack, the joint is often so inflammed that any contact (bedsheets, socks, etc) brushing against can be excruciating.

I'd be suspicious of a diagnosis of gout without blood tests or aspiration of the joint space.

My older brother has Gout. He got it a couple years ago at 28. He's also about 5-10 190. He drinks a lot of beer and soda though. Beer has high uric acid levels, which leads to the crystalline formation that causes the pain known as Gout.

He drinks less now. He says when he doesn't drink beer the pain goes away.
