It's pretty unlikely that your new employer is going to call you specifically to say "Guess what? You're not on drugs!" Similarly, if they do a background check they won't call to say "Guess what? You've never committed a felony!" and if they contact your references they won't call you to inform you that it looks like you didn't lie on your resume.

My last one took less than 24 hours. I went for the test one day. The next day they called me and said they had the results of the test, I could start working.

Only pee test I've had was for my first job 12 years ago. It took only 1 day for the results to be back to my employer.

If you come up positive, then a doctor will call you before the results are released to your (future) employer. This is a required formality - the idea is that maybe you have a legit excuse and you should be able to talk to a doctor about it instead of your employer. (if you were on prescription painkillers, or had a perscription to adderall or something)
Most of the time there is no legit excuse (especially for weed) and it's basically "you're screwed, sorry". If you come up clean, then they just send the results straight to your employer and it's up to them what to do with it.

I'm glad this trend hasen't caught on here in Europe. Not that I do drugs but I think it's way over the line to ask someone to take a drug test when applying for a job.
If someone ever asks me to piss in a cup to get a job I hope I have the balls to tell them to [censored] off.
