Here's a chart that makes it pretty clear...

http://www.footballcommentary.com/twoptchart.htm

If they make it 8% of the time (NFL average around 43%), then going for two is mathematically correct.

Yes I posted this exact thing, they dont seem to care.

I couldn't possibly disagree more. Everyone knows that they should go for 2 here. He's just looking for a way to mathematically prove it to a bunch of football donkeys. Math, common sense, whatever you want to use says go for 2.

I agree that gut decisions have their place but this ain't one of them.

Ladies and gentleman we have the Phil Hellmuth of video game football. He can see his opponents soul and go on his gut.

Yes, I agree. The same approach to poker has made lots of money when it comes to the vast majority of players on Party Poker. Lots of money for me, that is.

Haha, got it. Seriously, why bother having an argument about something you're so obviously right about? If they can't understand that then they're scary-dumb.

I dunno I just want someone else to support me and tell them how its not even close. I mean what planet is it where like 80% of people believe this is something to debate about?

Looks like a case of (F)FPS. There's valid arguments for kicking the extra point if there were a lot more time left in the game (esp. if your 2-point conversion rate isn't very good - i.e. 40%, etc.)....but with 10 minutes to go in this situation it's pretty horrible.

(a) it's not very likely that the other team is going to get two FGs in the time left remaining (or score a TD and miss the XP, or get a safety). So...unless one of the above happens, there's really zero benefit to that one additional point...and the odds of one of the above happening are very slim. (there may be a couple of situations/arguments where the one point is of some marginally tangible benefit)

(b) The fact that the score was only 14-6 in the 4th quarter (meaning points are much harder to come by than average) makes the argument for an XP even worse, b/c it's that much more unlikely that the 14-point team will be able to get two FGs since scoring is at a premium in this game (and maybe their FG kicker sucks - two TDs but no FGs).

Midway 2nd quarter in a game where points were a little less difficult to come by (say 21-13 before score) then you can argue that kicking the XP is the superior play (and some of your sharper coaches will do this - particularly in college where you get more drives/plays with the more frequent clock stoppage).
