I don't think its a dead ball (it effectively will be given the ball is in an outfielder's possession and the batter/runner is usually around 1st base), but the punctuation used in the MLB rules is kinda confusing:

I knew the answer to this because the Dodgers won a game on this rule a few years ago when Jason Kendall of the Pirates picked up a ball with his mask and threw it back to the pitcher. Winning run scored in the bottom of the 9th.

Okay, how about a more far-fetched question along the same lines. Let's say the CF was running to the ball, except his hat fell off on the way. Unfortunately, he grossly misjudged the ball and it landed in his hat without touching the ground. What happens then? [img]/images/graemlins/tongue.gif[/img]
