A Barak Obama/ Ron Paul 3rd party ticket that I feel, although on its face seems unreal, actually makes a lot of sense and could win.

[/ QUOTE ]

It makes no sense, but could win.

[/ QUOTE ]

True. Put Paul at the top of the ticket and I'm on board.

If you had the power to shape the politics in your country, how would you shape it?

I can't be the only one rooting for a "Star Trek" world here can I?

Elaborate

Well it was a little joke, but in the show Star Trek (got me, I'm a nerd) they have replicators that convert energy to matter. Because of that technology, there's no longer scarcity. Moreover, because there's no longer a dash for limited resources, people have mentally evolved to strive to better themselves (this is actually fairly believable, if there's no wealth to gain, what would you try and do).

It's pretty close to AC actually, insomuch as no one is forced to participate and the government is voluntary.

A a liberal, big-government welfare statist / libertarian, minimum government welfare opponent 3rd party ticket that doesn't make one bit of sense

[/ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

It makes sense because, first, they are both at odds with their parties directions and want change, back to what they feel is what their party is truly about. Second, their foreign policy in regards to the middle east is very similiar, although for different reasons (anti-war liberal/ old school ("Eisenhower") conservative isolationist). Most importantly, though, is that this ticket could change American politics for the better in the future, because it could win. How much better would it be if the two parties had libertarian / true leftist ideologies as opposed to the current religious neo-conservative / pandering centrist ideologies? No more BS wars, no more power to religious zealots, reinstatement of our civil rights and liberties (i.e. no more warrantless wiretaps, "Patriot" act is gone) and a return to a positive international image. And all of these things would get passed/ happen easily. The major debates in this country would then be centered on economics, and isn't that good?

I would nearly completely dismantle the federal government, leaving the country as an alliance of 50 states with only a few federal level powers. The federal government would be stripped of most means of revenue and spending, and would serve as little more than a service accepting contributions from the states for things such as national defense.

Why? because there is no single perfect way to shape the politics, so we're better off with 50 experiments going at once, shaping themselves in different ways that you can pick and choose from.

Federalism is the key to maintaining any hope of a future for the freedoms we value in this country,

I have to take issue with some of this w/ regard to Obama. While he opposes the war, he has not given any indication that he would actually end it. He also is a champion of civil rights and liberties only in certain areas. Ask him if he'll protect our liberty to the extent that we can keep all of our income and/or capital gains...

I would:

Start a Manhattan style program for a new energy source.

End subsidies to the oil industry.

Remove some of the tax breaks for the rich.

Require all developers to preserve at least 1/3 of any land they are developing.

Strengthen all environmental laws.

Allow Government money to be spent on Adult stem cell research.

Some form of Universal health care with free diagnostic testing.

Leave Social Security alone.

Reasonable Gun Control.

More mandatory sentences and do away with early release.

Spend more money on developing body armor for our troops.

Increase our Military Strength.

Secure our borders.

Fix the Homeland Security bureaucratic mess.

Appoint pro-choice Supreme Court Justices.

Streamline the tax code and have either a National sales tax or a flat tax rate.

Increase government investigations and penalties of online scams and false advertising.

Remove religious references from government.
