Re: Why is it ok to ask poker players how much they make?
[ QUOTE ]
Is there any other profession where this is acceptable? I have all kinds of people, some I barely even know, ask me how much I make a year or per hour. But if I ask them, it's incredibly rude? Wtf? Is this socially acceptable or have I just been encountering rude people? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, i don't know. It is incredibly rude. However, I want to know why I feel the need in particular to tell them. I'm not a person who ever feels the need to brag, however, I often tell them roughly how much I make quite easily. I think its an easier way to make them believe what I do is more legitimate. |

Re: Why is it ok to ask poker players how much they make?
I'm happy to tell people how much money I make, as long as they're willing to tell me how much they make.

Simple. People don't see it as a serious source of income. They see it as just a trip to the cardroom to gamble.

Re: Why is it ok to ask poker players how much they make?
It's probably a little rude, or maybe just not thought out which is a type of rude. I don't get all freaked out about it. Money has never been a big deal to me and my self image / self worth is not tied up in it, so I truly don't give a rat if someone knows what I make.
I do have a pat, true , and what I think is a good answer. I took early retirement and I answer that what I make total exceeds what I would have made per year if I kept working and I love every minute of it. Whenever I look at the time it's not like the bud-lite commercial with the guy in the helmet at 5pm, it's like ,,Crap, it's that late !! (Noted excpetion is when you are in a cold crashing and burning snap.) but it is an exception. |

Re: Why is it ok to ask poker players how much they make?
[ QUOTE ]
i just say more than at my old job. [/ QUOTE ] pretty much what I say. Sometimes I'll add that some weeks I make 'pretty decent money' and other weeks I don't. If they ask how much money I made last year I just say that I prefer not to say. I really don't like it when people who I don't know very well (who also know little about poker) ask me about it. One of the guys on my soccer team heard about my 'job' from a mutual friend and mentioned it while everybody else was around. I had 15 people all suddenly interested and asking me Q's about it all at once. Arrgh. |

Alternatively just come clean and tell them you're a degenerate.
