I can't like a move unless the underlying premise is conceivable based in reality.

You're gonna not like a whole lot of badass movies then.

Not true. Many movies have premises that are believable in the proper context.

I can easily get past the fact that the space fight scenes in Star Wars are wrong because you wouldn't see or hear lasers due to a lack of air molecules. The whole movie isn't based on this.

There is an evil empire, some rebels, some cool weapons... ok. The only possible problem is that there is a mystical 'force,' but that isn't an issue because maybe different creatures have abilities that humans are not able to achieve (remember, it was in a galaxy far, far away).

I know what you mean. Toy Story [censored] sucks. SO FAKE.

[/ QUOTE ]

Toy story is fine because it is fantasy, not science fiction. The matrix tries to establish itself as a future earth. Therefore, it must be based in reality to a certain extent.

UHH You do realize this is a movie don't you. It's not real. That's why it's called FICTION.

[/ QUOTE ]

Doesn't mean it can't have premise that makes sense.

So you would be ok if a giant 30ft penguin started shooting everyone at the end of the Matrix just because it is fiction?

[/ QUOTE ]

If it was organic, no. If it was a giant machine Penguin than that woulda been hella sweet!

Organic.

Not all plant life requires sunlight to grow.

They probably fed them whatever stuff the freed fed themselves on.

A better reason to not love The Matrix is The Matrix 2 and 3 (two good reasons in fact).

I struggle to watch what i still think is a top ten all time movie for me simply because i know how (badly) it all ends.

Re: Star Wars,

Very few shows and movies go for realistic lack of sound in space travel. Firefly and 2001 are the only two i can think of off the top of my head.

Ditto except for the top ten. Used to love it, but the sequels have ruined it.

I'm with you, Ape. I had the same problem with Soylent Green.

Plus, why did people have to get to a phone to exit the matrix?

Because hollywood loves the idea that if you die in a dream you die in real life. Hence you 'enter' the matrix instead of simply receiving 'sensory input' from the matrix. This paves the way for the incredible lameness that being hurt in the matrix causes observable physical damage in the real world (ie spitting blood).

Yes, there have been cases where people have been hypnotized and told 'you have been burnt' and a blister raises but if you tell them 'you have been punched in the chest by a wooden Australian actor' they don't spit up blood.

Aviva,

The phone system was a backdoor, a bit like a trojan horse program.

It was inserted by the original Anomaly, or possibly the Architect in collaberation with the Oracle. Depending on how you want to interpret that final scene and the Architect's speach in the 2nd film.
