I looked at the FAQ's definitive tipping thread and there 50+ posts. None are labled for tipping a Jackpot hand. Cut the OP some slack. I would like to know this as well....

Today I offered to tip the dealer at a 8-16 table 10% if he dealt me a jackpot. A regular told me 10% was standard. "Not for me" I replied. Then I winked at the dealer and upped my offer to 15%.

I don't have a strong opinion, if I can recall at my last BBJ I tipped around 10%. If you are a regular, whether pro or just for fun, you also have to consider how you will be perceived. I've tend to tip more now than I used to because I play at the same place every day. People know who I am, treat me well, and even though I'm a winning player I'd rather not increase my win rate $3 per hour by tipping the minimum. I enjoy the karma. So if I hit the BBJ, it's impossible for me to undertip.

But if I hit it at a "foreign" casino with personnel who I didn't feel treated me well, I'm probably tipping the minimum.

Okay, that makes more sense, but I still don't think I'd do much for the other players. I wouldn't expect them to anything for me either, but I guess giving them $100 each isn't out of the question if you want to be generous.

It's tricky, if I won a 25k slot jackpot I wouldn't tip anyone but the attendant, so I'm not sure why I'd consider sharing with the other players.

I understand wanting to spread the joy, but WHY would anyone ever think 10% is "standard"? In a poker room without BBJ or HHJ's, the dealers make their usual $1 per pot and are happy. The room creating a BBJ shouldn't necessarily become a lottery for the dealers, though many of them believe that's what it should be. (I honestly believe this is why many rooms have BBJs and HHJs--it's not to please the players, it's to create an income boost for the dealers). And I've heard dealers trying to get a BBJ pool created so all the dealers will share equally in any BBJ tips, while others are staunchly against it (in part because of the slippery slope to overall tip pooling).

Myself? I give about 25% away when I hit a $20 HHJ and the percentage slides downward from there as the total amount toked goes up. At some higher point, the dealer gets another, then the floor gets $5, then another $5 to the dealer. Never had to worry about $25K sorta jackpots, but I think I'd cap out at $500ish.

I DO toke more for tournaments and I've given away more than $500 when I scored big tourney wins. That's different than BBJ/HHJ's...it's part of their necessary and just compensation.

I don't object to folks giving away 10%. I do object to players and dealers insisting 10% is standard.

At the local club I play at, we are good friends with the guys who deal. The Royal Flush Jackpot has on occasion reached $2000, and since we play low stakes, this is considered a nice chunk of change. The action really goes crazy whenever the jackpot gets big. The last player about to fold sometimes asks the bettor if he has a chance at the royal (you only need one hole card for it to count), and if so he'll call to deal out the hand to give the guy a shot. Its a very friendly game and in this environment I would tip as much as 25% to the dealer (Personally I have seen people offer more) The dealers also occasionally play in the game so the money doesnt disappear necessarily.

As far as jackpots in casinos go, I'd tip much less, probably between 5-10%. I only to to AC to grind a little money out of the 1-2 NL game, so im not gonna try to act like a bigshot.

I got into a 'bidding war' on this once. Lost the war -- someone promised the dealer 30%. Everybody laughed. Next hand -- lo and behold, he got quad nines for a hh jp. Dealer got $60. That bidding war seems to take place everyday now.

for the record the warning wasn't against the OP, it was against a poster in the thread who responded to the OP with his political view of tipping. But all it takes is a few bad eggs to spoil the salad. No worries, we are keeping it open!

$500 would be a decent toke for the dealer, I brought this up with some other dealers who were over for the football game, and all of them would consider it a good toke as I would. Even $200 would be a nice gesture, that's better than many players will do and is still a nice bonus.

Incidentally, one of them dealt a six-figure BB jackpot recently and received zero from the main winner (a regular at his place who never tips). It's no BS saying that you don't have to massively overtip for a dealer to appreciate it.
