I'm not sure what you're saying. Trust is a feeling. I do trust my friends, I do trust Stars. But nothing's 100%. You seem to be saying trust does not exist. I'm just saying why I do or don't trust certain entities to a certain extent.

If the parameters changed as you say my trust in Pokerstars would decrease, and depending on the extent of that decrease I might trust them with the same amount, or less, or none of my money. Similarly if I had reason to trust a friend less (they stabbed another friend in the bank) then I may trust them less, be more careful what I say around them, not count on them, etc.

Trust does exist - it is an irrational emotional response whereby you assign a probability of 1 to certain events that are not in fact 1, usually because it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I'm just saying that I don't trust anyone. Maybe it's because I no longer have any emotions. Damned actuarial training.

Apparently we are using different definitions of trust, I stated some entities I trust with the caveat that I don't trust them 100%. trust can be built and it can be damaged, and I can trust Jim more than I trust Bob. I reject your binary definition.

Accepted. I started a nit-war and we'd be better off moving on to other things.

The current US government is not worth [censored] regarding trust.

LOL. The key word there is "because", which you have no basis of claiming.

I trust the US government because under its leadership I and most Americans are reasonably free, prosperous and repesented in the decision making.

I like having herpes because it's not as bad as AIDS or syphilis, and with some dietary modification and heavy Valtrex application, I can suppress outbreaks enough to have a reasonably fulfilling sex life.

Everybody acts in their own best interest.

That's exactly why you can trust people.

I bought a hot dog from a hot dog stand the other day. The hot dog vendor could have given me a very poor quality or deadly hotdog, but he did not. If he gives our crappy hot dogs, no one is going to give him business, and action might be taken against him. He is acting in his own best interest. That is why you can trust hot dog vendors.

[/ QUOTE ]

Good point. This is why I trust cigarette manufacturers.

You can trust them to give them exactly what you asked for, not exactly what's best for you.

Wait, where exactly are the goalposts now?

Recall the claim here:

[ QUOTE ]
The hot dog vendor could have given me a very poor quality or deadly hotdog, but he did not.

[/ QUOTE ]

Now replace hot dog vendor with Phillip Morris. Does hmk's claim still hold true? Can we 'trust' the cigarette manufacturer?
