Isn't your rating AJ Burnett as a top 25 pitcher the definition of vastly overrated?

I do think that adding the players that they did will help their team, but they overspent for almost everyone (which you probably have to when your team is in Canada).

Even with all of their additions, I don't think anyone views Toronto as a force in AL East. But they should make things interesting. They have a pretty good end of SP rotation, so they should be able to compete in most games. We'll see how it turns out.

LOL@torontos improvements being vastly overated. Im a sox fan, but thats just insane to say that. Adding a top 10 C, a top 25 SP, a top 10 Closer, and a good pop 3B, are all real good additions. The only one i would call overatted is Burnett and it certainly wasnt Vastly overatted.

[/ QUOTE ]

It is the impact of the moves that has been overrated, in the sense that they still are very unlikely to win more than 90 games.

Let's also not forget they're looking at a full season of a healthy Roy Halladay, which is worth a hell of a lot.

I still cannot believe that they traded Arroyo after he signed for a hometown discount. I guess baseball is a business though... hopefully Mo Pena Works out.

If you're about to sign a contract, and the other party is telling you something but won't put it in the contract, you should assume the worst. That said, I don't like the fact that it appears they went back on their word to Bronson. I imagine there's more to the story that we don't know, and won't.

Value-wise, I think it was an excellent trade, especially since Trot could get hurt and Wily Mo can mash.

I seriously thought there'd be a Tampa Bay Devil Rays thread before we finally got a Red Sox thread.

I'm more optimistic than most this year. I don't see the offense declining as much as everyone else does (Crisp = Damon, Loretta > crap at 2nd, Youks/Snow/Choi > crap at 1st last year, Nixon/Willy MO > Nixon vs. R, Nixon vs. L, A Gonz hitting 9th >= Renteria batting 2nd, etc.). The big decline is at 3rd, but maybe Lowell can get back his form, or Youks could take over and Choi/Snow could handle 1st.

The pitching was mediocre last year. I like our chances of getting 2 out of Schilling/Clement/Beckett to be better than any starter we had last season. With Arroyo gone though there isn't as much depth at starter, unless Papelbon moves back. Our bullpen couldn't have been much worse last year.

I guess we can't expect Ortiz to add 3-4 wins with clutch hitting again, though.

Does this end the debate over whether getting hit in the head ruined him?

No it doesn't. Clement has great stuff but can't seem to be able to put 2 good halves of a season together.

[/ QUOTE ]

what does that have to do with him getting hit in the head?

when clement pitches well is of little concern IMO. a soild outing in april is just as valuable as a solid outing in september.

yeah. Wrong response. thought you were saying the reason he sucked in the 2nd half was because he got hit in the head. I'm saying that's just his general history. Nipper will straighten him out though.

I'll take a solid outing (or 5) in October.
