Not really because he is putting himself into a test, believing that he has the strength to fight the temptation and not fall into it. This is dangerous, as we don't have the strength to fight the evil one. Only God has such strength, and we should not rely on our strength, but only on His strength for our part in the spiritual fight against the evil one. And we must rely on God's protection from temptation.

That Christian is no different to a Christian who goes clubbing, believing he can protect himself from ending up in a clubber's bedroom.

I sure hope we can. Yes I want to compete against the other guys and take their money, is this any different than regular 9-5 employment? If I don't take the money from the fishies, some other guy certainly will. At least I'm not going to spend the dough on anything really evil. I see where you could make the argument that poker is somewhat sinful, but if it is I believe I will be forgiven. If that's the kind of thing that's going to keep me out of heaven, I think many of us are really screwed.

I'm a Christian and I play. I think one (in general) just needs to be very careful because its walking a fine line.

To explain further, the line here isn't the whole "gambling is a sin" thing, or addiction, but rather valuing and loving something over/more than God.

as long as you are not gambling.

no money is involved or anything in stake is involved.

Why?

It creates in you coveteousness. You are now craving the property or goods of the person you are playing against.

It no longer is a friendly game.

And if that game takes too much of your time, too much that it robs your time from important activites such as prayer or even sleeping and eating, I think it is unhealthy already.

Playing Poker requires something at stake. It can start with a simple, easily replaced item like a pencil. As the Poker player playes more and more games, they may decide to place bigger items at stake, like expensive things or money. Some may not be able to handle themselves as easily when it comes to gambling. An addiction, I guess.
