Oh, so if he is inferring a closure of the room, what does that imply for the AC Poker scene?

Taj and Borg are gonna still be the places to play, along with a loyal player base for the Trop.

Showboat will never compete with these, obv. This doesn't change the fact that ODB has given us just enough info to start rumors, but nothing to substantiate them.

So the word is the HOB poker rooms days are numbered?

From what I have seen it wouldn't affect the AC poker scene much but I kinda like the atmosphere of the room.

they should probably just relocate it to an area in the casino that get more traffic. Its kind of in an out-of-the way place now.

This is how idiotic rumors get started. The guy implied that the Showboat poker room will be no more, but has not given a source or anything. So IMO, nothing has happened. The room is still deserted with an ok tournament structure, but crappy cash games and an inexperienced staff.

Spend a little time in AC and you will hear the same rumor, don't be so dismissive of hearsay when its pretty logical that it would occur sooner or later and thats also the buzz on the street. At the WSOP the floor daytime manager and I had a discussion about management's decisions in the Harahs chains of poker rooms, he said they keep moving managers around to open new rooms, and he expected Harahs to start closing the poor performing ones soon. He didn't mention HOB by name, but he did mention AC being a likely target.

Harrah's AC is far more underachieving than Showboat. Rob and I went to play a tournament there a few months back and asked the brush "Do you have an 11:00 tournament?"

They said, "Uh, yeah. There's an 11:00 scheduled."

We asked, "How many people are you expecting?"

They said, "That's a good question."

HOB is now pulling 70-90 people to their 11:00am and 7:00pm tourneys, and nearly 50 people to their 2:00pm tourney. The cash games are not the draw there, although they do pick up after tourney bust outs. I have seen four NL1/2 games going there before, although, yes, it is usually 1 or 2.

No, it will never compete with Borgata or Taj, but frankly, Taj is a dump anymore and I didn't enjoy my time playing there. Showboat offers a cleaner, smaller, friendlier room with consistently soft cash games and four daily tourneys with a great structure. That's why it's my first choice of where to play in AC.

Getting a high turnout at a cheap tournament isn't really helpful to the room if the players don't later sit down in the cash games. A poker room isn't going to stay in business merely from $10 tournament entry fees.

Three Saturdays ago, the room was pretty jammed around 9-9:30 through midnight, with probably six $1/2 nl games going, though nothing higher than that. I've generally seen decent crowds there when I've gone at night, and like the room quite a bit. It'd be a shame if it closed.

Honestly, I think that AC poker could survive (and continue to thrive)with only the Borgata, Taj, and Trop (which is rumored to expand). Bally's has a loyal crowd, mostly due to the smoking. The Harrah's properties (Harrah's, Showboat, and Caesar's) could shut down tomorrow and not really effect the player base all that much. I'm not that familiar with the Hilton's poker room, but FWIH it's nice but not exactly setting the world on fire.

Let's face it, right now there are probably too many poker rooms in AC. It will be interesting to see if the casino going in to where the Sands currently is (several years down the road)will even have a poker room.
