Re: Optimal strategy for addons?
I believe Raymer did some work on this, and if you have a stack big enough to be > average at the final table you shouldn't add on.

Re: Optimal strategy for addons?
You should always add on. One time, I didn't add on in a rebuy/add-on tourney, and I lost.

I realized like 2 minutes afterwards both times. It tilted me so bad, but I went deep in both so I think this is some statistical evidence that add-ons are bad. (disclaimer: sample size = 2) |

Re: Optimal strategy for addons?
Statistically I understand that if you are all in and you have an extra 3K you now have 6K you would not have had a couple more all in wins (which u gotta have to win a tourney) and now you are 24K to 48K ahead of where you would have been without it.
Even if you are the CL you are not going to be on top forever and the first time you are all in against a bigger stack you have lost value. It would be great to see someone that has run numbers, I'm sure some has. |

Re: Optimal strategy for addons?
i know that Sklansky addressed this in his Tournament Poker book, but i'm pretty sure it was very general...
does anyone have any numbers/percentages of stack size and all that. a few weeks ago i was a pretty massive chip leader in a stars rebuy tournament after the first break, and i decided not to add on (the only time i've ever done that). i ended up winning the whole thing. that is obvioously not an argument either way, but just found it funny. is there a simple "if the add-on is x% of your stack, do/don't add-on" formula? |

Re: Optimal strategy for addons?
Here's a scenario: Your the chip leader of a add on tourney with 147k at the break the add on will bring you to 153k the next closest stack is 61k do you add on?
I don't usually don't play add on tournaments but I would still consider it even in a position like this with a huge chip lead, while it may seem like a comfortable lead it can also evaporate in just a few hands. Another simple justification, you have 3750 left and double up through a mega stack to 7500 if you took the extra 6k from the add-on you would be 19500 almost triple your stack had you not invested, can you really afford to pass that up? |
