You should be only be thinking about the play that maximizes your EV. This is difficult when you are being results orientated during a session and keeping track of how many buy-ins you are up/down. If you are being outplayed and do not have a good edge then of course quit. Recently I have tried not to look at the cashier at all. At times I'll finish a 1k hand session feeling like I did really well. Then I go to Pokertracker and see I am actually down!

It may sound stupid, but I try not to remember the bad beats or even my own suck outs. I am just trying to make the best +EV move I can make at the time. My typical session can be anywhere from 600-1000 hands at a time six tabling. I usually just quit when I start to lose focus, but sometimes it is hard if there is a juicy game.

I dont have a stoploss, it seems pretty dumb unless you are prone to tilt - if tables are good who cares if you are down or up. Should matter if you are playing good poker or not

Part of the problem with tilt is you try to convince yourself you're not playing bad poker. If you don't have tilt, more power to you, but tilt can cost you many buyins in the blink of an eye.

Im very prone to tilt, once i start feeling frustrated I quit. But it always seems to late, I cant count the times i stacked off one more due to tilt.

I'm trying a new rule lately:

If the games are bad I play for one hour and keep playing if I've won otherwise I quit.

If the games are good I play and don't quit unless I make a tiltplay.

but when you are up, don't you talk yourself to quit on some point ? cause if you are up like 3-5 buy-ins, and have lost 1-2 buy-ins, it can be treated like you down 1-2 buy-ins on a new session..i think that the abillity of quiting while you are up is not less important then you are down.

I spend a lot of time coming up with a formula for me. I tend to lose my edge, get tired, bored ect. after 1100 hands. Therefore, I take a 45min break at that time regardless of my winnings or loses. At that time, I go over hands and make sure everything looks good. If I see I am playing well, I have the option to continue after 45 mins.

The other thing I have noticed about my play is that if I start with a 2-3 buyin swing up in the first 100-200 hands, I go on tilt if I lose that and end up even at any point during the session. Therefore, if I'm in that situation, I take an hour break before continuing.

I quit when
1) I get tired
2) I get bored
3) I'm not paying enough attention
4) The donks are gone
5) Some players are making me unconfortable
6) I'm afraid of losing money (either because I'm down a lot or up a lot)

Quitting while up isn't smart poker.
