Yes, you can certainly quit. If you really don't want to be there, they probably would rather find someone that does.

BTW, what is your job? What do you do?

[/ QUOTE ]

I like that first part!

As for the second, I am part of a research project proposal. Basically, someone else has written something but is obviously far too important to do it. Thus my job is to learn the techniques and skills he outlines, set up a laboratory, get all approvals that we need and run the experiment. This would not take three years, however the results of this experiment would lead to further work with the grants for money they've received ending after 3 years, at the rate they are paying me.

So far I have gotten all the approvals we needed, set up the laboratory (90% or so complete) and keep practicing the procedures to no avail. If I left this second they would have approval to do the experiments still within the next 270 days or so, 90% of a lab to do so, and no 'technician' (me, I guess), so they would need to hire someone.

sounds like you are going to quit. don't worry about them wasting time on you. They'd fire you without taking that into consideration if they needed to.

2 weeks notice. say good bye.

[/ QUOTE ]

In case I didn't make that clear in the OP, this was my primary concern. I didn't want to piss everybody off by leaving and ruin their entire experiment, but each day that I'm here I get the impression I'm doing that by being here but unable to actually DO their experiment. Strangely enough I had my 6 month performance review and it went really, really well. So they do not appear like they are going to get rid of me.

I just wanted to get opinions on loyalty and whatnot, and whether I should stay and finish out the project I was hired for rather than be a quitter and leave them high and dry (sort of).

Interesting question. Before I respond, let me ask...do you happen to live near either of the following 2 cities?

New City, NY, USA
Yuma, AZ, USA

As always, your timing is perfect.

This joke would have gone over my head if you hadn't said anything, although I think it's quite likely that boilingoatrunner is actually your own gimmick account.

People have called me a lot of things over the years for doing this whacky job. My friends think I'm a moron and have repeatedly told me that no amount of horribly disfiguring burns to my arms and legs could be worth the eventual reward for this job. The women I've been with over the years always leave me, realizing that they'll eventually get tired of putting salve upon my wounds every day, and call me a fool for my job choice.

But being accused of being Tuq may be the most heinous insult of all. How dare you, Klompy!

Besides, there's no way I could be Tuq. That guy is so busy posting on here that he'd never have time to run the oats, obviously.

He gets paid a hell of a lot of money to run down the road with hot porridge on his back every day. What more is there to know?

If you're so inclined, you might have a lot of leverage to get them to change some of your working conditions to make your job more enjoyable. Since you don't really care about the job, go to your boss and say, "Boss, you haven't done X and it's making it impossible for me to me to do my job. If you don't do X, I will have to resign." If they don't do X, you were going to quit anyways. If they do, maybe you'll like your job more.

Another option if you feel a little guilty about splitting is to offer to stay on for a couple months to help them find and train your replacement.
