Addiction isn't a measure of how much time you spend doing something. [/ QUOTE ] I'm glad to hear this. I was afraid I was addicted to sleeping. |

[ QUOTE ]
We're all addicted to some aspect of the game. However, the winners tend to be addicted to winning. The losers tend to be addicted to gambling. That's the difference. [/ QUOTE ] I agree. I am addicted to poker, cause i play it for more that a year now several hours a day, BUT, whenever i lose, my desire to play is greatly diminished. When i was a downswing i once didn't play for 2 weeks and was fine with it. Whenever i constantly win, however, i do want to log on and play and waiting for it. So, yes, i am addicted to winning, but if i would lose consistantly, i wouldn't even continue to play probably. |

If I was actually addicted I wouldn't have to force myself to get hands in.
There's really not much of a thrill in it for me, is there for anyone else playing 20 hrs+ / week? |

[/ QUOTE ] I play about 30 hours a week at small/medium stakes and still love the game. It's enjoyable constantly trying to tweak and improve my game to push my BB/100 just a bit more while moving up levels. I'd expect when I finally make it to the high stakes that the game will retain its thrill thanks to the level of competition and simply the raw level of earn potential. |

[ QUOTE ]
The term addict implies a detrimental outcome resulting from a pattern of behavior. So, a winning poker player, who sets aside enough time away from the tables for other things important in his life, is not an addict. The only place where the term addict would apply in poker is where a person keeps losing more than he can afford as recreation. [/ QUOTE ] Except that one can be a winning player and not set aside enought time for other important things in his life (just like any other workaholic). |

[ QUOTE ]
would you call someone who works 160hrs a month addicted to work? [/ QUOTE ] No. But if he read about his field of work every day and hung out with mostly people in his field of work and his spouse hated how much attention he gives to his work and all he talks about is his work I would say that his life is not balanced. I realize all of this is not uncommon to a lot of professions. 'Addiction' to work or poker can be a matter of degree. Since poker is gambling it would be classified as gambling addiction but if it's a winning player I think there is a fair amount of crossover with issues and its more like an obsession than a more typical 'gambling addiction'. |
