If the only fights you ever get into are the ones that are impossible to run away from or avoid, then the fights that you get into are going to be fairly serious situations.

I worked with a crazy [censored] this summer who spent a couple years in the pen. He always said if you're gonna get in a fight, throw the first punch, and hit them right in the nose. His claim was if you break the nose the person will freak out from the blood, and the pain is pretty intense. He said if you can do that you pretty much won the fight.
If you're using a rod though I would think the adams apple would be best.
