I'm sure you have lots of bullets so would you shoot your friend first or ignore his wishes and let him die more painfully?

I can't imagine why you would shoot the co here, unless its a general principle.

If you were his commanding officer and witnessed the event, would you have him court martialed?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, why not, Give him a chance to justify his actions to the system that taught him his values. I mean, it's not like the military doesn't have cites and comparsions for this situation.

Even if the soldier loses his case in court, he'll stand proud because he knows he did the right thing and had a chance to justify it. That's what I meant by sharing it with the people that understand.

I would do it, and I don't have the slightest clue what I'd tell his family. I have a feeling that I wouldn't tell them unprompted, but if asked for specifics I probably would. I don't think I'd lie to them about it.

Bullets and bombs whizzing by...... The time it takes you to shoot him might be the time needed by the enemy to shoot you. Leave him

Army motto might be "leave no one behind" my motto is "Don't be the guy left behind"

After reading your posts it's interesting to see the different response between someone who is in the military and who is not. As someone who is in the military the correct response is to pick up your buddy and take him with you. We do not leave people behind. Even if the soldier does die from his wounds, the family will have his body to bury. There is nothing more vile and disgusting than watching people desecrate the bodies of our soldiers. I also know that we have outstanding medical personnel waiting to help treat the soldiers. A landmine has destroyed a truck that Afghans were riding in. Basically blowing off both of their legs. The doctors and surgeons repaired their legs and after a a few months to a year (I can't remember the time exactly) they were rehabbing and starting to walk around.

While the situation may seem bleak, there is a chance the soldier could make it.

The OP made it clear to me anyway that there was absolutely zero chance of him being saved.

It's a thought experiment based on certain premises. For whatever reason, trying to save him is not an option. Your only options are to kill him or leave him there.
