La Historia Oficial
9 Reinas Luna de Avellaneda El hijo de la novia All 4 of those are good Argentine movies that I'd recommend. I believe La Historia Oficial won the foreign-language Oscar in 1985. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] The Yakuza Papers. Its a six movie series sometimes called the "Japanese Godfather" I think it does an amazing job in not glamorizing organized crime. The camera work is also very memeorable, raw is a perfect adjective to describe it. [/ QUOTE ] I've been wanting to see that for a long time. Sounds like you're saying it's yet another incarnation of shaky cam, though, so that makes it sound tough to sit through eleventy hours of or however long it takes. [/ QUOTE ] Shaky, yeah but it works |

Re: Foreign language movies
Movies by Buñuel that I love in Spanish:
Viridiana Silvia Pinal is so beautiful as this charitable nun that finds out that helping can backfire. Los Olvidados A very good movie about child poverty, it is one of very few films considered patrimony of humanity by the UN. El Angel Exterminador Incredible surrealistic movie. Buñuel has other gems but the other ones I remember are in French. Movies by Almodovar that I love in Spanish: Hable con Ella One of my all time favorite movies. Volver One of the best movies last year. Todo sobre mi Madre Strong movie with interesting themes. Others: Hombre Mirando al Sudeste Argentinian, it inspired KPAX) Matando Cabos Not a widespread mexican movie that I thought was hilarious Laberinto del Fauno Excellent fantasy movie set in the Spanish Civil War La Ley de Herodes Probably my favorite Mexican film. It didn't get worldwide exposure, but it is very good. I can't think of any more right now. I can think of some famous ones that I haven't seen (like Tesis by Amenabar). Hope it helps. |

Re: Foreign language movies
Bunuel was my favorite director at one point. I would love to see more of his Mexican stuff. I have read it talked down as commercial pap, but the only one I was able to catch was great fun and had me laughing pretty hard.

Re: Foreign language movies
Spirit of the Beehive is a terrific Spanish movie.
I have a soft spot for The Tin Drum. Oh, and you just have to see Aguirre, Wrath of God. |
