Where did this concept first originate?

On TV, perhaps?

I have no idea, but the world of high-tech is much more advanced than most are aware of, since most of the technology discussions in media or advertising or conferences or whatever is about technology for individuals and regular companies. Customers with special needs and suppliers with special cutting edge-solutions or personnel push the "technological frontier" forward and it takes a long time before it goes mainstream. A lot of things which you would be told is impossible if you asked an average supplier is already implemented by the cutting-edge ones.

Right, but only by 6-8 years. Awesome TV stuff usually is a good indicator of what's already possible.

Invent, prototype, run it till it breaks, improve it, distribute it. That's not an overnight process.

Big advantage of military budgets: Higher cut goes to R and D, and nearly zero goes to advertising.

And also they have higher expectations, they simply aim higher than most both when developing and purchasing (a great stimuli for suppliers and potential suppliers).

according to this wikipedia article. Space shuttle booster rockets have a seld destruct mechanism to explode them incase they hurtle towards a populated area during an emergancy.

All guided missiles have self destruct features generally referred to as ordnance, this is the most fail safe system on the weapon, they are tested time and time again.

Agreed, and less of a downside with their failures. Something blows up, oops.

I'd be very disappointed if every advanced form military aircraft or vehicle we had didn't have some sort of self-destruct mechanism built in.

I was pretty pissed when I heard about that surveillance aircraft that crashed in China in 2001 and got captured. The crew was hacking away at the electronic equipment but couldn't get the job done before they got boarded.
