Re: So I\'m addicted to nasal spray...
Those nose sprays are fantastic, but I can get "addicted" in as little as one or two days. Nose clogs up tight as a brick without it, leaving me worse off than before I started. So I use them for one day only.
I can get something similar with Visine, too, btw. So now I usually use a simple saline eyewash. |

Re: So I\'m addicted to nasal spray...
Cold-turkey is NOT the only way to solve the problem. I've had the same addiction a few times. Go to an eye/ear/nose/throat specialist if your doctor doesn't know what to do. The new doc will give you a course of oral steroids that will shrink the sinuses so you don't have to suffer. And be thankful that you didn't have this problem years ago like I did and had to have the steriods delivered by injection.

Re: So I\'m addicted to nasal spray...
One week later and I'm finally beat down enough to go see my doc. If anything, my rebound congestion has gotten worse in the week I've been trying to do this cold turkey. Sudafed has no impact. Benadryl does nothing but dry me out and make my nose bleed.
This is driving me nuts. Can't sleep, can't get comfortable when I'm awake. The pressure gets so bad that my right eye waters. Only the damn spray helps. Had to fall off the wagon last night when I couldn't take it anymore. At least I got some sleep. I did notice that the spray burned like hell when I used it. That was about 9 hours ago and I'm already jammed solid again. Hope the doc can give me something so I can at least get a full night's sleep. |

Wasabi works well. As does strong coffee and nicotine.

Re: So I\'m addicted to nasal spray...
I had this as a chronic problem for years and it took two suregeries and a week stay in isolation in the hospital with a antibiotic staph infection before it got solved. I had both my turbinates as well as my tonsils taken out at the age of 20 (removes the swollen tissues that block breathing) and then my septum fixed and my sinus cavities drilled open last summer at the age of 35. It is worth every bit of post-surgery suffering to get it fixed!!!
In the meantime no more sprays, get a benzedrex inhaler to use until you get to surgery, as it does shrink the nasal lining some to allow breathing yet its use does not have the awful rebound effect caused by the sprays. Also snort warm salt water with a pinch of baking soda twice daily. It does help. |

Re: So I\'m addicted to nasal spray...
Thanks for the info NN. I want to avoid surgery if at all possible, though.
I took 4 sudafeds at 11:30 this morning. I was clear from 1:00 until 2:15. Now I'm jammed up again, nervous as hell, can't sit still, and have major heartburn. Seeing the doc tonight. Fingers crossed. |

Do these saline sprays just not work for serious congestion?

Re: So I\'m addicted to nasal spray...
Eventually you'll need a spray just to wake up in the morning.
