Thanks everyone for the replies. I was almost certain that he had a Q (he actually had QTo) and I should have folded the river but I'm just not disciplined enough to do that as often as I should - although I am working on it as I know it's a big leak. It wasn't that I wanted to see what he had, I just liked my hand too much and fooled myself into thinking that I would win it often enough to make it profitable.

If you have seen him fold the turn before this might be ok but in general the rule is bet when you have no outs (ie you are making one last bet to see if you can win by pushing off his hand -WARNING: do not do this against calling stations) and check when you have outs (like this hand). You do not want to be pushed off your hand or forced to call 3-bets on your draw when you have so many outs. You are still drawing and you are pretty much obligated to see the river so do it cheaply.
