Does anyone know more about the Nov. 6th hearing in front of Congress concerning online poker? First I've heard of it, but seems like a good time to call and write in support of poker. TE?

There is nothing on the offical schedule, but if they have invited witnesses then it will more likely than not happen on or about that date.

We should all be writing and calling to build on the momentum from the trip. There is talk of new bills and of additional hearings, so the more we do, the more likely these are.

Please write, even if (especially if) your congressmen is against is.

Any policy experts want to comment on the likelihood of this happening? My gut tells me Barry is being overly optimistic but it's been a while since I've seriously followed politics.

I don't consider myself much of an expert on anything, but even quick passage of a bill in the House, runs into the Senate Judicary Committee. That is a whole different animal.

I am fairly certain that Barry's time estimate is based on WTO pressure, likely IP sanctions for Antiqua, pushing the legislation.

Barry's 6 month prediction is optimistic IMO, but not impossible. Once Congress is faced with paying money or changing laws to settle the WTO dispute, something must happen. But I doubt that right now, with GWB in the Whitehouse, anything good for us will get past him. There will be much resistance there, and the usual stooges and FOF friendly reps will back him.

Whether there will be enough pressure (by us and the WTO) to overcome that is the key political dynamic, so I am not really optimistic until '09.

Hehehehe

I frame my prediction on that Bush won't let anything through, so that's 14-15 months. Generally Congress focuses on budget items at the start of a year and they'll be the new President's priorities out of the gate...which IMO really puts things on hold another 6 months. That's over simplifying obviously, but I think 20-24 months is about the right timeframe if things continue on the track
they are now.

Lots of moving parts and as others have discussed, maybe the WTO stuff will move people more than I think.
