Trivial Pursuit 'cause I love knowing stupid things that mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Scrabble 'cause it's Scrabble

Does Battleship count? If so, that's my #3. The strategy was fun to mess with.

I used to like Mouse Trap as a kid 'cause it was fun to put together and destroy.

also my favorite, although I've always use it as a euphemism for choking the chicken.

Oh if we're going with simple very well-known board games then I choose Stratego. I was really, really good at that game for some reason, had like a .900 winning percentage growing up.

My background is in gaming, so I have played all of those and more. As far as a favorite, I would have to say Advanced Civilization, because the trading aspect is really interesting. Unfortunately, it is hard to play for the same reason. I like the 18xx train games, too.

Connect 4.

I totally own at it (Evan has won prop bets on me), it's simple, and it's one of the pure 100% strategy games. I hate luck games because dice and cards and wheels always screw me over.

I also really like Mastermind and Pente for similar reasons.

YESSSSS, awesome. I was mostly a Statis Pro Basketball freak though (and IIRC they had a decent football version too). Oh man I'm must have run the 1986 NBA Lakers-Celtics Finals That Never Happened about 100 times as a kid, and then later bought the 92-93 season which had "classic" teams on the back of the cards. But it was someone giving me baseball as a gift that got it all started.

Chess + Go - two of my hobbies. Both are deep games that reward strategic thinking and can be enjoyed on several different levels. I also enjoy reading about + studying the games. I'm a geek, I admit it.

For family style games, I do like the aforementioned Settlers of Catan. Lots of interaction between players, and it rewards thought + strategy without being offputting to potential opponents who may not be as into games as I am. Much better than the traditional 'roll your dice, move your piece' family games.

I also like Ticket to Ride - very simple rules, and another game that rewards planning + strategy without being intimidating.

Axis and Allies has always been my favorite too and the computer version makes the game go much faster. Risk, chess, Settlers of Catan, Trivial Pursuit are all good.
