All joking aside, this is an interesting challenge.
The fact that both the humans and the computer will get the same hands, does cancel out the luck factor up to a point.
The computer and the humans get the same endowment of cards, and play them against the same opponent hands.
The results after the first 2 500 hand mathces, by the way is 1 match was a draw, and the Polaris, the computer won the 2nd match by about $1000. They are playing 10/20 limit.

Maybe they could enter Polaris in the World Series of Poker next year?

I presume by "format that has helped us factor out luck", they mean Laak north Polaris south at one table, and Polaris north Eslami south at the other table, playing the same cards.

[/ QUOTE ]

This would mean the cards are pre-determined.. and that the computer could already know what it's going to do since it will probably be the one dealing.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, they can still be random. They just deal the same cards to each table. Somehow, Laak and Eslami are assured that the computers don't know what the other one has.

So far Polaris has won once, lost once, and tied once.
Any guesses on fourth and final?
I'd say Humans, probably 3:2.

This is, when Deep Blue beat Kasparov, it did so by going through all of his recorded games to learn his tricks. I think the next lkogical stage of the experiment would be where they feed Polaris all of Laak's hand histories.

Anyway, interesting experiment, and...

Hooray for Humans!

edit: This has to be a typo?
"A few hands later, Ali gets pocket aces and sees a QQ8 board. He gets raised by Polaris on the flop. Two clubs come down to make four clubs on the board, but the river goes check-check. Polaris shows two pair to win the pot."
