Did you even read the book? You're not accurate with your description of the premise and you didn't mention the Ted Binion murder trial.

The author wrote about his experiences, how is that "a topic he knows nothing about"?

Your non-sense makes me want to read "CARDS" even less now.

One of a Kind : The Rise and Fall of Stuey "The Kid" Ungar, The World's Greatest Poker Player by Nolan Dalla.

I couldn't put it down.

Rob,

I thought the murder description was the worst part of the book, because it glared of a writer not telling a story, but of a writer trying his @ss off to use every cute 50 cent word, every gimmik perverse sexual description to hook the reader. For me, there's nothing worse than a writer that is bending over backwords to try to sell me something.

You should have read his article for Harper's magazine. It is far better than the book, Positively 5th Street.

My favorite non strategy poker book is Ken Warren Teaches Texas Hold Em.

Wait..Was that supposed to be a strategy book or an April Fools joke that went to far??

The Hustler - Walter Tevis. Much better than the movie.

I'll give that a shot, then.

I'd like to add Ace on the River by Greenstein. Even though it has a few hands in the back to study, it is a great book to round out one's study.

I respect your opinion, but I thought "Positively 5th Street" was very good. It's not the best book ever written, but it was a descent read and I have no problems recommending it.

Although, I'd recommend the Stu Ungar book ahead of it.

I felt the exact same way. It was dry and very easy to put down. He had moments where the storyline started getting interesting then just when you thought.. ok, this is gonna be ok, he falls back into him packing a bag or getting ready to play a SAT or some other stupid diversion. The professor the banker and the suicide king was 1k times better read.
Best Poker Story Book?

Positively 5th street, and its not even close.

I couldn't agree more. However, I know Mr. McManus has his own style of writing, and every writer should, but the book could have done without the 6 pages of what exactly constituted non-nude panties for strippers in Vegas.

Amarillo Slim in a world full of fat people. The BS factor is no doubt pretty high, but it's a fantastic read and funny as hell.
