I would reflexively bet, and plan to 3-bet [/ QUOTE ] Whoa. Is that like giving yourself cancer to cure AIDS? I'm down with a check. With five opponents, I don't think we are going to have the best hand too often, I can see some pocket pairs and Jx hands. I don't think we will fold many better hands with a bet and all we get value from are flush draws, I guess maybe some Ax hands. I check with the intention of raising a LP bet, now we have the chance to fold better hands by showing the two bets, and we probably have 6-outs vs the bettor. If I see a free turn, I'm happy with that too. I'll call one bet multi-way if I have no chance of showing the field two. |

Re: AKs OOP
I have to admit, I'm not sure what's right here, but I lean towards betting.
Reasons to bet: * BIG POT * Thin the field -- players with hands like Q8 or something like that will have a hard time calling and improving to a pair of 8s. * Value -- It's not immediately clear that someone has to hold a better hand than mine. Reasons to check: * Possible late position check-raise * Possible get out of the hand cheap if it's two bets to me |

I like checking because one of two good things can happen. We may have a chance to check raise which really may thin the field or we may be faced with two bets coming back to us which will let us know we are likely behind and give us a chance to get away from the hand. In other words I think all the arguments you list point toward a check raise and away from betting out. |

Re: AKs OOP
if a passive player bets in late position is it really a good idea to check raise here?

if a passive player bets in late position is it really a good idea to check raise here? [/ QUOTE ] If a bet can only mean he has a pair, then check-raising is bad. However, if it can be a flush draw, the check-raising is a must to get heads up with a potential worse hand. |

Re: AKs OOP
edit: All that was garbage.
In a nutshell, he would have to be really, really passive ot not raise. |

edit: All that was garbage. In a nutshell, he would have to be really, really passive ot not raise. [/ QUOTE ] and then I assume the plan is to bet any turn card and check /fold river UI, correct assuming HU on turn of course. |

Re: AKs OOP
I made a reply thinking that the flop was JJ4. You are screwed on a J44 board.
