Re: Why poker and not porn?
[ QUOTE ]
Could someone explain to me how our govt. could pass the UIGEA and not ban pornography? Seriously, If somebody here has a good understanding of this law please tell me what I'm missing. [/ QUOTE ] If Larry Flynt had an online poker presence instead of a B&M casino in Gardena then things might be different. He has blackmail photos and information on many key Republicans. |

Re: Why poker and not porn?
Well obviously what the OP implies is true: going after poker is politically and financially motivated.
[ QUOTE ] Hello? Clinton tried to kill internet porn, it was declared unconstitutional, it's protected by the 1st amendment. It's free speech. They can however regulate it, which is why places have to have ID check stuff [/ QUOTE ] But has there ever been an attempt to block forgien porn sites that are not regulated in the US? [ QUOTE ] (being able to use a credit card was declared enough proof that you're 18). [/ QUOTE ] So basically, if you can pay up, the government don't give a [censored] how old you are. I bet anonymous prepay debit cards work fine. You don't have to be 18 to buy those do you. |

Re: Why poker and not porn?
The US government and various state governments have tried their best to ban pornography, but for the most part have been shot down by Supreme Court's interpretation of the 1st Amendment.
But while the Court views porn as speech, it would view poker rooms and poker sites as commerce, which the U.S. Government has the power to regulate. I think it is unclear whether the U.S. Government could regulate an unraked home game, but the states can. Note that in every state it is illegal to make pornography unless the actors are unpaid, since it constitutes prostitution. But in order to prosecute this the state would basically have to set up a big sting operation and would only get misdemeanor charges out of it. It is not illegal to buy, sell, or possess porn. |

Re: Why poker and not porn?
Why ban porn?
Seriously, with poker there is a reasonable argument that some poeple are compulsive gamblers and ruin their lives/families lives. What reasonable argument is there for making porn illegal? |
