most rooms have a minimum time you have to be gone in their rules.

also, can't you just play your different game when you're sitting on a big stack? the whole reason most places don't let you buy in for 1000bbs in no-limit is b/c of the huge advantage you can have. don't you want to have a huge stack when you flop quads while the big stack is sitting on the 2nd nut boat?

If your nervous about sitting there with a big stack and good players that have you covered, can't you just cash out, go get a sandwhich and buy back in for less?

[/ QUOTE ]

This is ratholing and, even when within the rules is an angleshot and silly.

More importantly, if y'all are afraid of the size of your neighbors stack, you should probably stick to playing Magic the Gathering online with ZJ's Grandma...NL is not for you.

Last weekend I was up about 25BB after 2 hours (limit). Started coughing every once in a while and feeling light-headed (no, I wasn't drinking!). 4 hours later I was down 25BB and not feeling well at all. Next day my wife diagnosed me as having come down with the flu. Have been feeling crappy all week. Just now starting to feel normal again, so I think it's time to head out.

Note to self: don't play when sick.

Note to OP: get up if you are not feeling 100% physically.

One, it is not "ratholing". Learn the term.
Two, it is not an "angle". Learn the term.
Three, if it works for him, it is not "silly".
Four, if tall stack players don't like it, don't let him double/triple up in the first place.

If I'm up 6 buyins & almost everyone else is short stacked, I get up. If you're nervous about being ahead & playing then it's time to get up. If you still want to play, cash out, wait the allotted time & buy back in. Remember, it's not the seat but the player in it. It's never dumb to get up when you're ahesd.

I don't see any problem is setting a financial goal and leaving when you hit it.

If I'm playing $500 NL, I would not mind leaving once I hit $1500 give or take...

setting financial goals is a good way of controlling your pace of the game, but as the OP said, if the game is super soft, stay until those players leave

If the money is important to your BR, then stand up. For ex, you win 4-6+ buyins, and those are substantial to your BR, get out of there. I know its one long session, but having bets in front of you that are generally out of your league is stressful. I dont like to be sitting at a table that does not have a comperable stack, so if I have 3 buy ins or more, and everyone else has one, I will rack up.

If you feel uncomfortable or threatened in any ways, which you obviously were, it's time to go for sure. You're now placing yourself in a position of playing poorly if you stay.

[/ QUOTE ]

I recently had the chance to play a couple of hours with one of the best online high stakes NL players. He had one statement that rings so true and I will never forget it.

"To really be successful, you HAVE TO make your competition uncomfortable."

He came in shitfaced, a beer in one hand, a grimy roll in the other.
He ran over the night's tournament, netting first in record time.
He sits in the only 1/2 game going, avg stack $300. He raises to 12, one caller. Flop 833, checks through. Turn J he bets $200, gets called (all-in). River K. Tables K4 for the pot.
Everyone reloads to match. He keeps drinking.
He keeps overbetting or runner-runner to a 2700 stack. He's still drinking.
We're still reloading.

Buddy says "I'm leaving, it's 3:30am, I'm your only friend, and your only ride"
Drunk says "[censored] off, I'll get a cab"

Avg stack is 1000. Blinds are 1/2.

4:30 his stack is $2600.
5:00 his stack is $0. His wallet is $-630.
The blinds are still 1/2.

Choose your own adventure, when would you stand?

Just a note to everyone... I wish I had stayed. Since that night I have seen the same guy, who seemed to be playing extremely solid that whole night blow a few stacks, almost as large, playing the stupidest hands ever. All someone had to do was put one or two bad beats on him and he would go on a rampage... Woulda been good information at the time.
