Dude, I am trying to help. I've been there. So, you spend the money for 4-5 days in detox, she get's released, stays clean for a bit, then she shoots up, snorts, smokes, or whatever again, and where are you? Exactly where you are today. That's the way opiate addiction works. I take it this isn't the first time you've seen this pattern, right? What is your goal with going just detox? [/ QUOTE ] yeah i realize she won't get "cured" in a week and that her sobriety will be a daily commitment for the rest of her life etc.. i also realize that often the only solution for chronic relapsers is long term inpatient treatment. my immediate goal is to buy myself some time until i can find a longer term solution. her family has written her off (for now), but if i am able to help her at least get headed in the right direction, then maybe they will get re-involved. mapping out her lifetime sobriety seems a bit ambitious for a friday afternoon. |

There is no point in true rehab until SHE wants it, and means it. It sounds to me like you're just trying get her detoxed now before she kills herself. This is certainly admirable, in my opinion. I wish you the best. You've got a very tough road ahead of you. |

Detox is just the first miserable step. She will need treatment beyond detox. Contact your community mental health center. Every state has a system, and they will be able to help. If she is destitute, there will be money to get her tx. If she has a job, and some $$, but not enough to pay for tx, it may be harder.
Of course, if you need to do everything for her, she may not be ready. Good luck. |

Luckily for your friend, heroin withdrawal will not kill you.
Ironically, the only withdrawal that has that possibility is alcohol, which is a legal drug. Go figure. Good luck finding your girl a place to go, you might be best off calling your local narcotics anonymous chapter and asking for a place she can detox. |

The best rule of thumb is to avoid at all costs ever having to withdraw from anything, whether nicotine, gambling, dope, food, or relationships. Take a walk in the park or at the beach. It's nice. |

I think methadone might be the best solution for this girl.

I think methadone might be the worst solution for this girl. [/ QUOTE ] Methadone is most definitely NOT the answer (unless the question is "What's the worst possible way to get off of heroin"). edit: Methadone withdrawal can take weeks (as opposed to a few days for heroin withdrawal). If someone is going to keep taking opiates forever, Methadone is the least destructive. If they are going to be coming off of opiates at some time, then Methadone is a terrible choice. |
