i didnt want to raise preflop since i was oop and if he pushed i would have a tough decison and would've been behind more often that not calling off all of my chips on his range of hands.

I agree with re-raising pre-flop. If the guy shoves you can fold knowing you were behind or 50/50 at best.

uhh if he's gonna 3bet hes gonna put in like 9kish and then fold? putting half your stack in pre and then folding is pretty gross

I don't reraise preflop so I can fold to a shove.

I might shove preflop if I have a read that villain isn't overly tight and will steal from HJ with AJ/KQ/KJ/QJ type of hand. That said, I like the line used by OP since we definitely have a workable stack even if we miss flop and check/fold.
