Someone my wife knew from college spent a couple of years as a professional dominatrix, and as far as I know, there was no sex with clients.

I can vouch for this, however: it is a sub culture and a society to itself. These people get together for conventions, parties, huge play time get togethers, and all kinds of things. It's something that a lot of people do 24/7. Meh, I'm not interested in it to that degree, but to each his own. Obviously there's (x) amount of either dom/sub in each of us, and for some people it's strictly what gets them off/turned on, etc. Tbh, from my limited view from the outside looking in to that culture, they're sort of like friendly family types who just engage in very rough play, but there is no prostitution and for the most part cleanliness and safety are extremely important to these guys.
