Intro to stats, which I had to take as a requirement. The teacher is explaining the concept of EV, something I obviously knew well. She used keno as example saying that for every dollar you wager, on average you will get back $.75, therefore the EV of a $1 wager is $.75. I realize this is completely wrong, but I don't want to be a dick about it.

"Um, from everything I've read, the EV of a $1 bet would be -$.25 because you expect to lose a quarter from the bet. The EV would $.75 if you expect to win $.75 every time you bet a dollar."

"There are a lot of ways to state the same thing in statistics, blah, blah blah"

At this point I'm thinking she might not actually be wrong and Sklansky et al might just be using some weird non-standard system.

"If I use my system on a test, will you consider it wrong?"

"No, you can use it if you want."

After class I looked this up in the book and discovered that, guess what, there's only one correct explanation of EV.

When I was in college, I took a human sexuality class. I went to college at West Virginia U., so there was an inordinate amount of really stupid people. So in the human sexuality class, we're talking about porn, and the teacher is asking different peoples' opinions. This one dummy girl, with her bleached blonde hair and southern drawl, was like, "I think porn is wrong, because a lot of times these girls don't have a choice in the matter. A lot of the times, there's a guy off-camera holding a gun to their head forcing them to perform. Sometimes, they even kill them afterward." It took about three seconds for eight people in the back of the room to correct her, yelling, "That was in a movie (8mm)!" I've never been more irritated at someone else's stupidity in my life.

otnemem,

Linda Lovelace claimed to have been forced to perform in Deep Throat. She also mentioned being forced to perform at gun point, so I can see why that idiot in your class could believe what she said.

Okay, but that's one, heavily disputed, example from thirty years ago. Either way, I don't think there's any shortage of willing young women waiting to turn 18 to make a few extra bucks these days...

I was in a lab in college and overheard a guy saying "I wonder what it feels like to be shot." I told him it probably hurt.

I really, truly despise people like you. So you agree - they're forced at gunpoint, and threatened with death?
