Playing at my local casino the other night and one of the players at my table said, "I think it would be hard to be Phil Laak and know your girlfriend makes such sh1tty plays at the poker table."

Insert sounds of crickets chirping as every male at the table just stared at him.

While the preliminary matches are mainly a luckfest, I find myself watching Poker Superstars every week. After watching tonight's show, I want to know who makes the determination on who is invited to this show. If you want those cans on tv, why not just show her every two hands that Phil Laak plays? Others that I can't understand selecting are Mimi Tran and Jeff Shulman.

[/ QUOTE ]
I think it is fairly obvious why Jennifer Tilly was selected.

Jeff Shulman is the editor of "Card Player" and the sone of the owner, so I assume he has a connection.

Mimi Tran is a friend of Barry Greenstein. I don't know if that helped her or how she got in.

The eight players in the PSI1 were all world class. I liked that show best, but I am not the general public.

It is kind of hard to determine who the 24 best poker players are. Aside from people being chosen on connections or to make an entertaining show, the players are biased towards those with TV exposure through major tournaments.

"Card Player" bought a seat as part of its sponsorship of PS3 on FSN.

One can safely say that Jeff Shulman paid much more money for his PS3 seat than anyone of the other 23 players.

Remember the "golden rule" of entertainment: he who puts up the gold, makes the rules.

The only notable "class of 2005" members in PS3 were Tilly (who swept both the WSOP and WPT Ladies titles) and Hachem.

The other members of "class of 2005" with multiple wins on TV, namely The Grinder, Michael Gracz, Tuan Le, John Phan, and Mark Seif, didn't make the cut for PS3.

Winning 2 TV tournaments in 12-18 months is no longer enough to get a seat in invitational tourneys such as PS3 or to get an endorsement contract that is worth something (i.e. 6-figure stipend plus buy-ins and travel expenses to play big buy-in live tourneys).

I am not saying most of the players are there for what they did this year, but they are there for TV exposure in the past. I can think of various high stakes cash players and online tournament or SNG players who have stronger reputations among professional players.

I liked Tily's aggressive style at the PSI3, but she played too reckless wild aggressive and it hurt her more than anything. Like all of us, her game could use more work.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think the hand that summed it up was Tilly reraising Mortensen from the BB, then checking the flop, turn and river and declaring "I have a King."

They should bring back the cast of the original poker superstars (and add phil hellmuth). The original poker superstars at least had post flop play and was interesting to watch.

I think a bad beat is it isn't available on DVD to watch. If anyone can say differently, I would be very interested in the product.

It seems as if her big pair is not well hidden.
