Default Re: Trying to improve your game? How?

I have been playing a bunch of different games and formats to try to improve my overall poker ability. Lots of big field mtts, some HU sngs, HU cash, and of course 6 max and FR cash, sometimes full some times shorstacked. Majority is NLHE but I'll also play a good bit of Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo.

For a while I was trying to "find" my game but I have realized that I don't need to! Why not be a generalist and play whatever I feel like playing, so long as its profitable?

While I can see the advantages of becoming a specialist at one game and format and grinding the [censored] out of it I just don't think it is for me.

Anyway, besides that obv reading 2+2 and other sites, talking over aim to people, watching vids and PXF mtt playbacks, yada yada yada...

One thing i like doing that helps out a ton:

After a session, look into poker tracker and go to session notes. Make it so that you see your biggest pots won and biggest pots lost. Review these hands over and find better ways to play, see if you could of lost less money or maybe got more value in big pots. If you are stuck on the hand, post it in a forum and have others tell you what you could have done differently.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is "sweating"?

Yes, I do this far too infrequently. There's no excuse, I don't do really long sessions, and 2-tabling means it isn't a lot of hands.

OP, nice thread idea.

Two things I will add, both are things I have posted in the past in other threads.

(1) Take shots. Buy-in short if you like... but take shots. (and don't change your "style")

(2) Something I started about a year ago REALLY has paid off well for me. I have a Master document with three or four sub-Documents on my desktop. The Master is for General play, the subs more specific.

If I see a statement/strategy I read here on 2+2 that I like, I don't add it to my favorites. I cut and paste into the appropriate document....adding a little "setup" if needed.

Now when I need a little pick-me-up or MORE LIKELY a refocus back to "my game", I read my Master.....think Yoda here if you like. My Master is about 7 pages long and takes me about a half hour to read carefully. Funny thing is, that's about the time it takes for me to adequately mine a few tables BEFORE play.

I am now kicking my butt pretty hard right now. I have been losing most of my roll over the past 5-6 weeks. Coincidently, I haven't read my Master lately either. I'll do better tonight, I guarantee it!

Are you referring to the "Professional No-Limit..." book by Flynn, Mehta, and Miller? I have this pre-ordered as well. This it the first time I have pre-ordered anything.

[/ QUOTE ]Yup, I'm pretty sure this is going to rock.

[ QUOTE ]
Being the session review guy, I won't say anything bad about them. However, I do think that sweating is the next logical step up.

[/ QUOTE ]I didn't mean that session reviews weren't great- they are. It's just that the sweating really is the next level. Still, we all need practice at the "feel" of the game as well as analysis, and sweats tend to help with "feel" and session reviews with analysis.

I just haven't had much time for session reviews lately

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you were saying that session reviews suck. I was just carefully agreeing that sweating is better.

I think you summed up the differences between sweating and session reviews very well though.

I also am thinking this new book shall rock the masses. What a bunch of nerds we are...
