[ QUOTE ] I have no idea. Is that what I'm supposed to think makes the reporter dumb? Knowing wacki, I'm guessing it's something far more esoteric than that so that he can show off his knowledge of the periodic table and his ability to google things. [/ QUOTE ] Evan, what is the #1 component of air? And since you bring up the periodic table, yes nitrogen has the atomic number 7 and oxygen has an atomic number of 8. Holy crap this thread makes me sad. [/ QUOTE ] Air is like 70% nitrogen. So does the extra 30% that's not oxygen and other random crap make no difference? I have no idea. NT |

There's very few of us who know this, or care about it, or have had our lives effected at all in the past 5 years by not knowing this. Perhaps this post would go over better in some science form. |

Reporters are stupid because:
1. O is heavier then N 2. Air is composed of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Why are they believing that filling a tire with oxygen is worse then nitrogen? Who would anyone be filling a tire with oxygen? Regular air is mostly nitrogen. |

[/ QUOTE ] Wacki, I know that nitrogen makes up most of the air. I don't know if that makes this story completely implausible and I don't think that's something that you shoudl expect most people to know. Why does this make you sad? Not everyone knows a lot about science because most people don't give a sht. Don't you have a degree (or multiple degrees) in sciences? I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I (and everyone else here) know that you don't. It doesn't make me sad though, it just makes you normal for not being the same person as me. The elemental properties of nitrogen are not very important to most people, I'm surprised that surprises you. |

Even if this was true then the oxygen would likely bleed out faster than nitrogen leaving you just pure nitrogen. |

[ QUOTE ] I have no idea what the point of this thread is. [/ QUOTE ] well, if it costs 50 cents at your gas station to fill your tire, yet to fill it with nitrogen costs 5$....and it deflates 6 months slower than oxygen...how are you really saving 7% over 12 month's time? [/ QUOTE ] But if you save $ on gas then i can see his point. This makes sense if it's true. EDIT: but app. it's not |

I 'spose I'm dumb. Does the stuff lead to better gas mileage, or not?
It appears that this is the main claim by proponents. The tree huggers like it, and reportedly Nascar and Indy cars use it. |

[/ QUOTE ] There are enough holes in this story that knowing the atomic numbers shouldn't matter, and to be curt it's irrelevant because nitrogen actually is *slightly* larger. |
